Happy New Year! Thanks to Butterflies' long-time supporters and many new friends, we've reached our campaign goal! We deeply appreciate your commitment to improving the lives of street youth striving for a better tomorrow for themselves and their families!
Butterflies, a child rights organization in New Delhi, India, runs the Children’s Development Khazana (CDK), an innovative, child-led financial and life skills program for street-connected & working kids.
The goal of this year’s crowdfunding effort, organized by Butterflies USA, is to integrate technology into CDK and bring additional skills training for youth, helping the Butterflies’ children’s development bank update to 21st century financial and accounting practices.
Contributions in any amount will make a real, tangible difference in the life of a street child, of which there are now more than 500,000 in New Delhi alone. Consider what your donation can provide:
$30 buys 8 CDK Ledger Books
$50 buys 15 Cash Books or 200 Savings Pass Books
$100 pays for updated financial and accounting software
$250 pays for 1 CDK Transactions Counter (table, chair, cupboard & CDK
board) for formal banking transactions
$500 covers 1 CDK training/awareness program for 50 children
$1000 pays an adult CDK Teacher/Facilitator’s salary for 2 months
$2000 buys 15 computer tablets for digitization of CDK accounting
$2500 pays for updating and printing 5000 CDK Hindi-language brochures
Through CDK, Butterflies offers essential life skills to children, teaching them how to prioritize their needs, while learning about budgeting and saving. Any child between the ages of 9-18 can become a CDK member, regardless of ethnicity, religion or other affiliation. CDK is child-owned and run by children themselves, under the guidance of adult facilitators.
In addition to organizing general meetings, each local CDK branch nominates its own Child Volunteer Manager and Loan Committee members for a term of 6 months. These periodic rotations open leadership opportunities for many children. These members receive training in basic bookkeeping & accountancy, communication skills, and teamwork -- equipping the children to manage their own Khazanas (banks) based on principles of cooperation and collaboration.
CDK also offers support to members who want to become entrepreneurs or learn a professional skill, enabling them to rise above their situation of poverty and insecurity. Children seeking to start or expand their own ventures can apply for loans once their local Loan Committee determines the venture is viable and ethical. At the core of all of CDK's activities is a commitment to democratic values, which strengthens life skills education so that children can:
--Meet their basic survival needs
--Gain essential financial management skills
--Learn vocational and entreprenuerial skills
--Participate fully in decision-making processes
CDK is currently operating in 10 states of India and 8 countries worldwide with a total membership of 15,265 children and savings of nearly $85,000 (Rs.55,27,372). All the money is deposited and saved in reputable local banks, which in India currently pay at least 9% interest on savings accounts.
