I first learned about Human Trafficking back in 2012 when I heard Sheryl WunDunn speak about this topic at The Global Leadership Summit. If you are interested in learning more about her work I recommend reading Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Sheryl WunDunn and Nicholas Kristof. It wasn't until a couple years later that I learned that this global health crisis isn't just happening overseas but in our back yard. The term 'global' includes the US!
Nefarious: Merchant of Souls is also another informative documentary on this topic and includes interview by victims and perpetrators of sex trafficking. I agree with how Sweden is addressing this crisis by eliminating demand and arresting those individuals buying sex. Prostitutes are the victims and need our help, support and God’s grace.
Bring your tissue for both learning opportunities as they go into detail about how rape is used as a weapon of war, prostitutes are sold to service upwards of 40 men/night and how you can help. Runaways and foster children in the US are at high risk as well as those who were sexually abused by their family members as children. My family and I started attending NorthRidge Church in the summer of 2014 where I first learned about RidgeRunners and Love Runs! Fast forward 2017 I will be able to cross this off my bucket list!
Love Runs - NorthRidge Church wrote - 1440. The number of minutes in every day that a human trafficking victim is enslaved, and the same number of minutes we are free. What will you do with it? Join us in the fight to end human trafficking in Metro Detroit. Love Runs is a good steward of resources! Last year Love Runs kept its overhead expenses to less than 8.5% compared to the standard goal of 15% for a charitable organization. Love Runs is not only showing fiscal responsibility, but also putting more money into our partner organizations – more resources into rescuing victims.
Thank you for consideration and generosity!
