The Monarch Alliance, a program of the Potomac Valley Audubon Society, will be putting in beautiful monarch habitat at the at the Thomas Kennedy Memorial Park and Plaza in Hagerstown, Maryland.
The Thomas Kennedy Center and Memorial Park and Plaza is dedicated to celebrating Hagerstown-Washington County's state legislator Thomas Kennedy's tireless efforts of advancing religious liberty and inclusiveness in 19th Century Maryland; and teaching how his legacy applies today, regardless of differences that might exist among us in race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, color, orientation, and gender.
The Thomas Kennedy Memorial Park and Plaza will be dedicated to the ideals of religious freedom and tolerance.
We have asked botanist, Ann Aldrich to design the gardens at the park. Ann has held numerous positions focused on the myriad of aspects of land management during her career with the Bureau of Land Management. Since then she has worked with Dumbarton Oaks Park Conservancy, a private partner to Rock Creek Park, to rescue the Park from the inundation of invasive plants and stormwater to return it to its glory as designed by Beatrix Farrand, America’s first woman Landscape Architect. She has worked with Larry Weaner, the well-known ecological landscape designer.
Ann’s design will include a ten foot band around the plaza on which the memorial sculpture of Thomas Kennedy will stand. The five feet next to the plaza will include over 600 milkweed and native plants. The outer area of the band will include 7 American Hornbeam trees. Between the trees and the native plants will be native shrubs, including Red Twig Dogwood and Black Chokeberry. We will use volunteer labor to install the plants and shrubs. The Monarch Alliance will purchase and install the shrubs and plants. We estimate the cost of the shrubs and plants at $3000.
The monarch gardens, when completed, will be the first of its kind in the region, using all native plants in a carefully constructed landscape design. We hope it will, along with the memorial sculpture of Thomas Kennedy, add to the appeal of our city.
The memorial sculpture of Thomas Kennedy will be constructed by Antonio Tobias Mendez. Toby, a Washington County native and resident and internationally known artist, was selected as the sculptor for the Kennedy project. Among Mendez’s works are statues of the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall on the grounds of the Maryland State House in Annapolis and six Hall of Fame Orioles baseball players at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
The Thomas Kennedy Memorial Park and Plaza is a collaboration between the City of Hagerstown, the State of Maryland, The Monarch Alliance and other sponsors. http://www.thomaskennedycenter.org
