Can you imagine the nightmare of learning your vibrant five-year-old son is suffering from numerous blood clots? And instead of spending the summer getting your child ready for kindergarten, you’re forced to stand by and watch as he fights for his life. This was the reality that Gianni’s parents experienced when they learned that their seemingly healthy five-year-old son was suffering from what doctors called “thrombotic storm”.
In 2014, Gianni was home sick with the flu when he began complaining of shortness of breath and was taken to the ER where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. Luckily, Gianni’s parents knew the signs of a blood clot and insisted he be transferred to a nearby hospital for a second opinion. It was there that doctors confirmed their suspicions….
Gianni was indeed suffering from blood clots, not just one, but many. Blood clots had invaded Gianni’s tiny lungs (PE), heart, legs (DVT) and arm. Gianni was diagnosed with “thrombotic storm” – a very aggressive and serious form of blood clotting, which is often difficult to treat, as there is very little research or documentation of this disorder. As a result, Gianni spent the next several months fighting for his life, while his parents were unsure of the challenges each tomorrow might bring. Against all odds, Gianni pulled through and was eventually able to return home. Since the cause of Gianni’s blood clots is still unknown, he will remain on blood thinners for the rest of his life. Today, Gianni is eight years old and thriving. He excels in school and loves fencing, baseball, swimming, and track. He still has to visit his hematologist every six months and have routine blood tests, but he is doing well. If Gianni’s parents didn’t know how to recognize the symptoms of a blood clot, he may not be here today.
Gianni is living proof that blood clots truly can affect people of all ages. Will you join Gianni and his family in supporting the research, education, and awareness work of NBCA this holiday season?
Your donation will support ongoing research efforts and programs promoting awareness, education and professional training on the signs, symptoms, and prevention of blood clots. With your help, NBCA can continue to educate even more people and save precious lives like Gianni’s.
Every dollar raised for NBCA over the next six weeks during our holiday campaign increases our chances of winning up to $500,000 from the Newman’s Own Foundation. This is an incredible opportunity and we are most grateful for your generosity. Thank you for your support.

Are You At Risk For A Blood Clot?
Regardless of age, gender or race - we're all at risk of developing blood clots. Up to 900,000 people are affected by blood clots each year in the United States alone. Sadly, statistics show 100,000 of these people will die. That's more than AIDS, breast cancer and automobile accidents COMBINED. Studies show that only 1 in 4 people know how to identify the signs and symptoms of blood clots. The National Blood Clot Alliance works tirelessly to raise awareness about the risk factors, signs and symptoms in an effort to prevent blood clots and save lives. With your help, we can Stop The Clot®! By sharing our valuable information, with your network, you'll be helping to save lives each and every day."
