Oak Hill Center for Education and Culture is a school for learning, researching, sharing, and exploring creative strategies and tools for transformative social movement building. We develop and identify organizers, educators, and artists committed to social and economic justice. In the fall of 2013, a small group of organizers, artists, and educators came together to discuss the social and economic inequalities facing communities in Baltimore and around the world. At the heart of this conversation lay two questions: What are the forms of organizing needed to build social movements that can address the roots of these inequalities? And, what role can artists and educators play in helping to organize broad-based social movements? This conversation resulted in a commitment to creating a school for strategic reflection and the development of curriculum and cultural tools for transformative change. Since then, thanks to your support, and entirely on a volunteer basis, we have been able to build out our own meeting space in East Baltimore, coordinate summer long intensives focused on the history of our neighborhood and W.E.B. DuBois’ Black Reconstruction, hosted over two dozen educational community events on topics ranging from rust belt union organizing to hosting three day strategic planning sessions for the launch of a New Poor People’s Campaign for Today. All while also having twice a month regular community education sessions to reflect on the local, national, and global politics of our current moment. . ...And we have done this, for four years, with zero paid staff. Which is why we’re bugging you again. In order to continue providing a space for political education, strategic planning, and cultural production to local residents, community organizers, activists, and artists at low to no cost, we need your help. Please make a donation to sustain and grow Oak Hill’s movement education mission. You can help strengthen our work in this time of renewed social movement activity. Please donate if you can, and reach out to us if you want to get involved in the collective or use our space for your own efforts to help empower our communities!
