BENEFITING: INTERNATIONALS NETWORK FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS INC
EVENT DATE: Jun 14, 2011
I'm doing a little fundraising for our school's *first-ever* play, a project I'm producing with two other dedicated teachers and 25 amazingly creative students! We're working on it 6 hours every day until June 14th, its premiere. As with many schools do in California, my school, Oakland International High School, in Oakland needs money, until the budget improves. Our students get either PE or art class every year - not both. My project combines PE and art together, and provides opportunities for kids to gain confidence and get super-invested in a fun, collaborative project with peers and bring something positive to our school and local community.
We've never had a play at our four-year old school, and this is actually a combination play/circus -- a little slice of Cirque du Soleil. Students proposed play ideas, voted and wrote the script. Students are composing beats and melodies. And students are learning circus skills and putting together acts. It will be an amazing first for our school.... if we get the funding to make it so. The pictures you see are from last year, which was a fun, show, but we want to take our project to a new level.
Our play is called "Sweet Dreams, Amy" and the plot is so clever it made me crack up - and I know you'll enjoy it too. Come see it - it's playing Tuesday, June 14th at our school in Oakland. And to help us get it done, please give to our parent nonprofit, the Internationals Network of Public Schools. We're hoping that by making this show look great, and by filming it, the resulting video will help us get even bigger grants in the future, so we're building sets and backdrops, painting our cafeteria, making costumes and getting lighting (so the overhead flourescents are not the only source of lighting).
