BENEFITING: GRAND ASPIRATIONS
Summer of Solutions Oakland is a non-profit organization led by youth ages 15-20. We are located in the community of Fruitvale in Oakland, CA, at Peralta Hacienda Historical Park. We work with kids of ages 5-14; SOS Oakland provides workshops like sports, gardening, arts &crafts, and more. This year we have no funds towards our camp needs or stipends for our low-income youth interns, we would really like for our community to help us raise the money in order to set our needs.
This summer our goal is to raise about $3600, we would use $2800 for 7 of our interns, we did mention to them that we didn’t have stipends to pay them and in order to do so they would have to fundraise, we didn’t give a certain amount but we find it fair that we at least give them a minimum of $400 each or more for the work and great effort they put into the camp. Our staff has agreed to fundraise, but it would be great that our community helps us reach our goal as well.
$300 would be used towards our supply needs for crafts, gardening and sports. We really need funds for our supplies, our camp is running really low on supplies like paper, Pencils, coloring utensils, etc. without supplies we are not able to have workshops for the kids, and so far they are really enjoying the arts and crafts workshops we’ve had with them. We have really talented kids that love art and it would be really sad that we don’t provide supplies for them.
The kids are very interested on working in our garden, we have started gardening by growing their own bean plants in cups, but they are anxious to start working with soil. We need to buy seeds, good planting soil, fertilizer, or any other goods in order to have a healthy garden for our kids.
Our program also involves kids in sports and right now we don’t have as many supplies as we may want for our workshops, we need to buy footballs, jump ropes for our young ladies, tennis rackets that we have a lot of balls for, and without our sports gears we are not able to do more routines other than soccer or hand ball.
The rest of the $500 we would use $200 for transportation, and $300 for snacks and water. Some of Camp staff has to travel in bus each day in order to arrive to camp; we would really want to provide bus funds for them so they don’t feel the pressure of having to pay for bus fares each day. Also our kids work really hard that they get really thirsty through the day, we only have tap water but no cups to offer it to them, and it would be really nice that we can provide water bottles and snacks through the day so they don’t dehydrate or lose energies.
