During the summer of 2005, Hurricane Katrina, the sixth-strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, devastated the Gulf Coast as far as 100 miles from the storm's center. The levee breaches which flooded 80% of New Orleans resulted in at least 1,836 people losing their lives and cost $81.2 billion, making it the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.

In order to assist in the rebuilding efforts in New Orleans, we are participating in a service-learning trip sponsored by our school, Oakwood Friends School. During spring break, we will be working with a relief group assisting with rebuilding efforts in the affected areas. We will also have an opportunity to visit the Lower 9th Ward and meet with local merchants and families affected by the storm. We are really grateful to have the opportunity to see the impact of the storm firsthand and offer our assistance as the city residents continue to rebuild their lives and their community.

We are writing not only to make you aware of our upcoming trip, but to ask for your assistance in making it a reality. In order to pay for the trip, We are taking part in different fundraising projects, including talking with my family, friends and local business owners and community leaders about our trip. If you are interested in contributing toward our trip, please feel free to contact me and I can tell you more about what we’ll be doing and what we hope to gain from the experience.

Thank you for considering assisting us in attending our school’s volunteer trip to New Orleans.
