BENEFITING: Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow
ORGANIZER: Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow
I joined the Young Adult Internship Program at OBT after spending years bartending on and off so I could make a better future for my son and gain professional work experience. After the program ended, I was looking for a full-time job and OBT encouraged me to apply to a new partnership program they were doing with World Monuments Fund and The Woodlawn Cemetery in stone masonry conservation. My dad worked in construction so I knew it was something I was interested in.
Throughout the 10-week paid program, we learned how to identify different types of stone and clean them using "non-invasive, eco friendly methods!" For our group project, we worked on restoring the Gracie plot at Woodlawn Cemetery.
After the program ended I earned two certifications from OSHA and got a job with a contractor specializing in historical preservation. I am now helping to restore the Trinity Church on Wall Street.
As the only woman in the first program cycle, I hope to pave the way and inspire more women to enter the field of construction. I'm here to help raise money for OBT so they can do more cohorts of the masonry program.
I am so thankful to OBT for giving me this opportunity!
