I'm relaunching my fundraiser in memory of Jake. ❤️
March 26, 2017
Ocean Healing Group (OHG) is “dedicated to providing once in a lifetime, adaptive sports adventures to wheelchair bound youngsters and their parents.” Their mission is "to expose kids to a wide variety of sports and activities, things they would never have the opportunity to experience otherwise... including but not limited to surfing, snorkeling, zip-line tours, fishing, quad riding, nature tours, and horseback riding."
My buddy Jake Benarth (who's in a few of the slideshow photos, starting with the first one; yes, the handsome, jubilant dude) is the youngest son of my very dear friend, Mary. He became A-T free March 22, 2017. A-T is Ataxia-Telangiectasia. A-T sucks. For the majority of Jake's 30 years, A-T compromised his life in countless ways, including putting him in a wheelchair at 10 years old. And A-T has now left so many of us sad, heartbroken and deeply missing Jake. But Jake, and his parents, wouldn't let A-T dictate what he could and couldn't do. And neither did Ocean Healing Group. Jake loved OHG and was a regular at their awesome adaptive surfing retreat, Shaka Beach in Costa Rica. In memory of Jake, I’m relauncing my OHG fundraiser from 2015. All the money raised will be used exclusively to fund an OHG adaptive sports adventure for participants and their families. These funds will not be used for administrative overhead or providing staff for the camp. All camp volunteers and ambassadors pay their own way.
The one-week camps cost between $8,000 and $10,000 per camp, depending on airfare (participant and one family member). In addition to airfare, cost includes: hotel stay, meals, transportation and excursions. Typically the camp hosts 3-4 participants and their families, with a total of about 20 people including the volunteers.
Please consider making a donation to support Ocean Healing Group and to ensure that wheelchair youth and young adults can continue to enjoy the life changing experience of Shaka Beach Retreat that Jake so much enjoyed. And please make your donation in memory of Jacob Benarth.
