ORGANIZER: TEAM RED WHITE & BLUE

EVENT: Old Glory Relay 2016

EVENT DATE: Sep 11, 2016

THE STORY:

On September 11, Team Red, White & Blue launched the Old Glory Relay in San Francisco with athletes from Team RWB, Microsoft, Salesforce, Pinterest, Facebook and Google. Our journey to connect communities, veterans, and this great nation will pass through the great Desert Southwest where I will hit the course in some of the most remote but beautiful terrain in the world.

I am raising money for this incredible cause and I need your help!

Team Red, White and Blue’s mission is to enrich the lives of American veterans through physical and social activities within their communities.  As a civilian, I’m often asked why I participate in this organization. It’s my hope that by my participation, I can help bridge the gap between veterans and the civilian communities they live in. I also do it in memory of my cousin, who killed himself in Iraq. Maybe if he’d had more mental health support, he might still be with his wife and two sons.

I joined Team RWB to help veterans and have found that it has enriched my life as well.  Although I’ve never served in the military, I still have experiences in common with many veterans. I’ve personally dealt with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and in the last year, a TBI that has led to isolation due to losing my job. Exercise has been a way for me to have structure in my day and be active in the beautiful area where I live. I’ve connected with a number of Team RWB members who share my interest in running and cycling. There have been days when I needed to train for a race and the only thing that got me out the door was knowing that an RWB teammate was counting on me to show up for a run or ride together.

I’ve even found a new interest as a result of my participation. After running about 10 miles with an RWB teammate to support him during his first 100 mile run, I discovered that I really enjoy being a “pacer,” helping runners like him to make it through those super long runs. If I hadn’t gone to his race, I never would have known about pacing. Now I’m really looking forward to more opportunities like that!! I also love the sense of community I feel, knowing that I have teammates all over the world, and meeting new people at races just because they’re wearing a Team RWB shirt.

I know you all have options for where to donate your money, but as a steward of your resources (when you donate to Team RWB), please know that $0.87 of every dollar goes directly to veteran enriching programs.

Your contributions lead to real results in the lives of veterans in your communities:

  • 40% of veterans involved in Team RWB report that they are less down, depressed or hopeless
  • 59% of veterans are more active in their communities since joining Team RWB
  • 61% of veterans exercise more regularly since joining Team RWB
  • 57% of veterans in Team RWB feel they have more people they can turn to for emotional support
  • 79% of active veterans report they are more satisfied with their life
  • 49% of active members report they feel less nervous, anxious or on edge

Thank you for your consideration and for your support in this critical mission!

Yours,

Mary

More details about the Old Glory Relay.

At sunrise on September 11th, Old Glory was unfurled on the Microsoft Campus in Redmond, Washington for an inspiring experience connecting Eagles, Patriots and Communities across our great Nation.  Throughout this third iteration of “America’s Relay” 1,000s of hands will help transport Old Glory the 4,216 miles of this year’s completely redesigned course.  Each of the hands that will touch this year’s Old Glory will have their own story of why they are connected to the symbol of our nation.  These stories woven together will impact communities on and off the course with positive enrichment through action. After 62 days on the course, the Old Glory Relay will conclude in Tampa on Veteran’s Day.

This mission is driven by our Eagle Ethos of PASSION, PEOPLE, POSITIVITY, COMMUNITY, CAMARADERIE and COMMITMENT.  The relay will be led by Team Red, White and Blue’s unique style of leadership blending EMPATHETIC & AUTHENTIC actions, GENUINE & LOYAL relationships, and EFFECTIVE communication. The connections made through the Old Glory Relay are supported by our presenting sponsor Microsoft’s desire to empower veterans of our Nation with the tools for a successful career in the IT industry.
