BENEFITING: MAJORITY WORLD MARKET DEVELOPMENT INC
EVENT DATE: Sep 30, 2013
Located in a small government-owned tent camp in Port au Prince, Haiti, OFEDA (Organisation des Femmes Devouees en Action) is a unique and independent women's group founded after Haiti's disastrous January 2010 earthquake.
The women who make up the group, ranging in age from 18 to 82 years old, came together to support and encourage each other to live with hope and possibility. By starting a business together, they hope to find a way out of the tent camps, reclaim their live and continue to move forward with security and dignity.
Their first venture is designing and making handmade greeting cards and soaps. The conditions under which they work are extremely challenging. During the daily summer monsoons, the women are working in a sweltering tent or outside where the wind and dust make card-making and soap making a challenge. But still, they persevere and create beautiful products.
This campaign is to raise money for additional training for the women, to empower them with additional skills to help their business thrive.
The training would give them skills in the following areas:
• Business management
• Strategic planning
• Soap making
• Card design
