Greetings from Nakivale refugee settlement! My name is Joseph Agotre – I am the Assistant Settlement Commandant for the Ugandan government’s Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) at Nakivale. We oversee the running of the settlement. And, in fact, this week we are in the middle of our census when we count all of the refugees living here in the settlement.
I’m very excited about the World Refugee Day 5k, because I think I have a great idea. It’s to host a futbol tournament here in the settlement!
Sports are very important health-wise and to help people stay entertained. We want people, especially youth, to have activities that keep them a little busy and not standing idle.
A tournament would give the teams in Nakivale – and there are at least 12 very strong teams here – something to look forward to and train for. Competitions encourage excellence, promote youth and help identify those who are talented. We would offer prizes to the teams, including balls and shoes for the winners – many of our players don’t even have futbol boots.
I hope you’ll support our OPM team’s idea and help us to support youth here in Nakivale.
