On December 6, 2009, Officer Michael Crawshaw, a Penn Hills police officer, had responded to a call and was waiting in his patrol vehicle for backup when he was ambused and killed in the line of duty. He was 32 years old. The suspect fled from the scene before officers arrived was later apprehended, charged, and is currently serving a life sentence for the death of Officer Crawshaw.
Officer Crawshaw was a 2001 graduate from Shaler Area High School. After his death, the Officer Crawshaw Memorial Fund was established to provide scholarships for graduating Shaler seniors. In 2010, the scholarship was distributed for the first time to four recipients. I was one of the four recipients and have tried to continue fundraising for the fund. To be an awardee of the scholarship is a significant honor that I have not, and will not, forget.
This is my first year running the half marathon, and I cannot think of a better way to honor the memory of Office Crawshaw.
