Hi! My name's Meg.
Before I tell you my story, I would like to give you a little background on who I am: I'm a senior at Berklee College of Music and I major in Music Therapy. I am originally from Pasadena, Maryland. (Yes there is a Pasadena in Maryland). My music tastes are all over the map. I enjoy rock to rap, and it is my goal to help others. This is my first year running the Boston Marathon, or any Marathon for that matter. So your support would mean the world to me. Okay. So here it goes. Here is my story as to why I am running the Boston Marathon for Brigham Woman's Stepping Strong Team.
I grew up in a very loud Italian household, with two extremely supportive parents. I remember going over my grandmother's house, where she would make plates upon plates of Italian food. She would be running around the house screaming at everyone in Italian "Manja manja" (eat). She was always a little crazy, but my grandfather John, was always there to balance her out. I remember him sitting me down and telling me stories about when my grandmother and him married at 16. He was a very kind and humble man. Everything that he had, he worked his tail off for. He was wise and never spoke just to speak. He was the man of great example for me to follow and look up to.
Anyway...when I was around 7 years old, he had some heart problems and had to have a valve replacement. A few months after this, he started to get sicker. He was pale, shivering, and feverish from what I remember looking at him in that hospital bed. When we asked the doctor, she told us he just had a virus. But even as a 7 year old, it did not look like a virus to me. A few days later, he had a massive stroke. I remember seeing him in the hospital, and asking if there was anything I could do as a 7 year old, and because he was misdiagnosed, there was nothing we could do. Later that evening, he passed away. I was devestated.
Years later, I found a love within music. I then started talking to my grandmother more and more about him, and decided to major in music therapy. His kindness and generosity is what inspired me to try to become a music therapist. I want to prevent this story of my grandfather from happening to any other family. This is why I am running the 2018 Boston Marathon on Brigham Woman's Stepping Strong Team. My goal is to raise $10,000. They have vowed to donate all funds to stroke and trauma research, and to bettering their rehabilitation facilities. I want to run to inspire others and give hope to trauma and stroke survivors. I want to run for him. Will you help this cause?
