Ohana For Refugees
Organized by: Tamara Wedin
EVENT DATE Feb 29, 2016
Our family is headed to Greece!
For months now our family has been watching the news and the social media updates on the refugee crisis in Europe. Now it's being called the largest humanitarian crisis since World War 2. I've been explaining to my four year old daughter what a refugee is...that they are people, just like us, whose home is no longer safe. That they are families packing up what they can carry to get their babies and children to safety. She has been offering ideas of how we can help for awhile now. Four year old ideas. :-) Some seemed far-fetched until they had time to simmer. And then our family began thinking of our daughter, Marina, who was stillborn. How even today, we would do anything to bring her back to our family safely. That if just ONE person had been able to do something to save our daughter, that we would have given anything for that. How other families must feel the same way.
So, our little family of four is headed to the Greek Islands to help in any way that we can. We bring with us translation skills, basic first aid and CPR, experience working with grieving families, a willingness to work and help, and hearts that want to greet these families and let them know that they matter in this world. That others want to help them to get a better life for their family...one that doesn't have them worrying if their children's school will be bombed that morning. If you could please help us raise the funds to help these other families...we would be grateful. We are planning to stay for 2 months. The funds we raise will be used for the purchase of items of greatest need. Our personal expenses will not be paid for with these funds. Currently items of greatest need are winter boots, warm socks, new underwear, sleeping bags, warm clothing, diaper cream, diapers, and so much more. We will adjust to what the refugee camps are needing as it changes. We would also love to be able to purchase some comforting items that can ease some of the suffering...art and music therapy items for the kiddos...baby carriers for the mothers... We will be updating our friends and supporters on Facebook both while raising the funds, and also while we are there...letting you know what the money is being spent on while on the ground. We can all do something about this crisis. If you can't go yourself...please support someone who can. Ohana.
