What is the International Owl Center?
Many have become familiar with the International Owl Center through its popular Rusty & Iris Cam on Ustream. Located in Houston, Minnesota and founded by Karla Bloem, the organization advances the survival of wild owl populations through education and research. The IOC accomplishes this through biological and cultural programs and displays, green building design, citizen-science and other research, international exchange of information, the World Owl Hall of Fame, the International Festival of Owls, and other means.
What is the OKCOwlCam?
The OKCOwlCam is a live video stream of a family of Great Horned Owls that have made their nest for the past several years in the second-story planter box of Alessondra's home in Oklahoma City. Her Dad set up a video camera to enable her to watch the nesting process, and since then, over 5,000,000 viewers have joined the fun. The OKCOwlCam has become part of Alessondra's home school education, through which she learns about biology, public relations, technology, and charitable giving.
What is the Save A Hoot! Campaign?
The "Save A Hoot!" Campaign is Alessondra's charitable component of her OKCOwlCam project. Her goal is to raise $10,000 or more in contributions to go towards the construction of the Owl Center's new facility, which is a state of the art education center complete with aviaries and learning venues. Last year, her Season 3 campaign, "Give A Hoot About Hunger", raised over $13,000 for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
