THE STORY:
I'm running in the Long Beach Marathon/HM to help raise funds for a rescue organization that is very dear to me, Old Dog Haven.
Those of you who've known me for a while will remember my dog, Michael, a lab/pit mix whose family dumped him at a kill shelter at 13 y/o. The wonderful people at Old Dog Haven took Michael in and worked quickly to find him a hospice home. That home ended up being mine, and Michael, who I never expected to live more than a number of days d/t his age and frail state, slowly blossomed. After a few months Michael became known as "Biggie" because of how much weight he had gained! (might have been the Starbuck's danish I fed him every morning!) I eventually adopted Michael when I moved back to the southwest and he spent his last 3 months soaking up the sun in Arizona before passing away--loved and surrounded by his family. We were lucky enough to have him with us for 10 months. He was such a great dog.
Old Dog Haven (ODH) has over 200 dogs just like Michael in their care. With the downturn in the economy, that number is on the rise. ODH takes in senior dogs (most come from over-crowded shelters) and cares for them through a network of foster homes. These homes provide dogs with much needed love and attention, but all expenses (vet bills, medication, specialty/prescription food) are paid for by ODH. The rescue needs our help.
ODH (www.olddoghaven.org) , a 501(c)3 non-profit rescue, relies solely on donations and does not receive state or federal funds. By sponsoring me in the Long Beach Marathon and HM you'll be making a tax-deductible donation to Old Dog Haven. Please help me support this truly exceptional rescue.
Thank you so much!
