Olentangy Orange Travel Club
Organized by: Mike Demana
As a history teacher and frequent traveler, I have seen changes in myself and others that have traveled abroad. Someone who has been that "other" -- the outsider to a culture -- learns from the experience. They become a more tolerant, understanding and accepting person. They also cultivate a fascination with the world as they travel. Each trip you take overseas, you learn interesting things about new people and places. It is precisely these traits I want to develop in my middle school students. I want them to become lifelong learners. I want them to become accepting of other cultures. There is no better time to create these new citizens of the world than middle school. My kids' eyes are opening up to the world out there. Their intellects have developed to where they can understand new concepts, and embrace new ideas. So, in my 5th year of teaching 7th grade Social Studies -- but 33rd of avid traveling -- I created a travel club at Olentangy Orange Middle School in Lewis Center, Ohio (USA). The tours are arranged through the world leader in educational travel -- EF Tours. I will lead them all myself, with the goal of imparting my love of history and learning to them. I will split 100% of the donations I receive among my travelers who sign up for the tours. Nothing will be kept for myself -- which when you think about it -- is kind of how I view my role as an educator: Giving it all for the kids! So, maybe you can give a little and help me give my all...!
