BENEFITING: ROCKY MOUNTAIN FOUNDATION OF HOPE
EVENT DATE: Aug 26, 2012
Team Olivia is back at it again! Last year we all came together for Olivia and her battle with cancer. I made a promise to Olivia that I would race and finish an Ironman Triathlon for her. I was supposed to do Ironman Louisville 2012 last year. I wasn't able to race in Louisville because I caught Hypothermia which turned into Mycoplasma Pneumonia and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. I used Olivia's great attitude to help me get better! I was in the hospital for 7 days and it was a life changing experience. We are back at it again and Team Olivia will be racing in Ironman Lake Tahoe 2013 on Sunday September 22nd 2013. Olivia lets do this!!! GO TEAM OLIVIA!!!
Olivia is 9 months post cancer treatment and is doing awesome. She is cancer free and you would never even know the ordeal she went through. She has started Kindergarten and loves it. Olivia does have some permanent hearing loss from the intense chemo so she will be rocking hearing aides in about 2 weeks and she is perfectly fine with that. She is a strong and brave little girl.
In November of 2011 a sweet 3 year old girl named Olivia Carroll was diagnosed with a rare cancer called Neuroblastoma. To beat this awful cancer Olivia has done LOTS of chemo, had a stem cell transplant and done battle with VOD (a very serious and life threatening disease on its own). She is headed into a round of radiation next before topping it all off with another 5 rounds of a form of chemo called a monoclonal antibody that will specifically target any remaining neuroblastoma cancer cells. Through all of this Olivia has shown the strength of an Ironman and is inspiration for my Ironman training.
I will be racing in the 2012 IRONMAN LOUISVILLE on Sunday, August 26. An Ironman includes a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. In training for this race I plan on running, biking and swimming 3,000 miles. If you see me out there on the streets of Kansas City, MO feel free to shout "Hello." I'm the firefighter wearing the pink Team Olivia bracelet (it's been a great reminder of how strong a person can be). This is my second Ironman so I know what I'm in for. The training for an ironman is tough...almost as tough as Olivia!
I would like to raise $3.00 for each of the miles I run, bike and swim during my training (remember that I will be doing about 3,000 miles total during my training...that's a $9,000.00 goal) to give to the Rocky Mountain Foundation for Hope. Olivia's neighbor and family friend Shannon Cox is the Executive Director and President of this foundation. This wonderful foundation provides support for families with cancer and also funds cancer research. Shannon will be working with the Carrolls to help with any medical bills related to Olivia's treatment that are not covered by insurance. All donations for Olivia will go to the Carrolls if there is need. Funds donated that are not needed by the Carrolls will be given to another family in need. Please help support my efforts by donating what you can to this strong little girl and help me spread the word by joining the team, reposting, emailing your friends this link or tweeting (every day!). We will wrap up this fundraiser the week after the Ironman Louisville. If you want to follow my progress on race day (8-26-12) I'll have the link posted.
