Hi, my name is Ambreen Maan and I just want to say it’s not okay!
It's not okay that every 8 minutes, a young adult is diagnosed with cancer and every hour a young adult loses their battle to cancer. Cancer is now the #1 disease killer in young adults.
I had just turned 19 and was starting my second year of undergrad when it hit me like a freight train-- I got cancer. After spending over a month in the hospital, getting numerous scans, blood transfusions, biopsies, and bronchoscopies, I weighed little over 80 pounds and was diagnosed with stage IV Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I had to drop everything and focus on my health and treatment that, at times, seemed never ending. While my friends were busy living their lives, going to school and having fun, I was busy visiting doctors, getting infusions, and dreading those terrible bone marrow biopsies.
For the first time, I truly felt alone. Though my friends and family were supportive and there for me every step of the way, they could never really understand what I was going through. I needed to talk to someone who had been there, who knew what it was like and who would actually understand what I meant when I said I had "chemo brain".
That is when I heard of the I'm Too Young For This! Cancer Foundation, the largest support community of young adult survivors and caregivers in the US. Online at http://StupidCancer.com, they give survivors like me a voice and raise awareness for the unique issues that I face as a young adult; issues like isolation, fertility, sexuality, dating, insurance, career building and more.
Their annual conference, the OMG! Cancer Summit for Young Adults, is a pivotal event that brings together hundreds of young adult survivors and caregivers for a one-of-a-kind experience of healing, education and community. No one should go through cancer alone. The OMG! Cancer Summit makes this possible.
Please support my efforts to ensure that I and other survivors like me get the chance to attend this event and make a difference for so many thousands of young adults in need.
