BENEFITING: STUPID CANCER
EVENT DATE: Mar 30, 2012
The OMG! Cancer Summit is the premiere oncology conference and social networking event for the young adult cancer movement.
A program of the I'm Too Young For This! Cancer Foundation, the OMG! Cancer Summit, now in it's 5th year, has become a pivotal healthcare event that inspires thousands of survivors, caregivers and providers—along with scores of academic, advocacy, research and support organizations—to get organized, build community and unite as one to drive change.
70,000 young adults are diagnosed with cancer annually; one every 8 minutes. Young adults (including long-term childhood cancer survivors) are an underserved age group by way of their sheer isolation and lack of connection to age-appropriate programs, peers and support resources that restore their dignity and educate them on issues relevant to their unique needs.
Just after my 27th birthday I discovered a large hard mass in my stomach, but because it was not painful I ignored it. Mothers day came and I still had not gone to the dr.... that evening we lost my grandmother and after dealing with all that goes along with funeral arragements, I was reminded how short life was and how I needed to take care of myself, so the following week I went the dr. When I first seen the dr his facial expression said it all. He sent me that day to get a ct scan and after that its all a blur! From one dr to another I was poked and stabbed with needles and anything else under the sun but wasnt offically diagnosed with anything. Exploritory surgery was planned and June 28th and after 5 hours of surgery I woke up and over heard my mom on the phone... " yes it was cancer and she had a total hysterectomy ". I hit the morphine button and went back to sleep. My 3 day hospital stay turned into 2 weeks and I had tons of complications. Wound vac after wound vac till my wound closed up from the inside out. I did 3 rounds of chemo and was finally cleared Sept. 30th 2010! Just celebrated my one year!!! I am soooo excited that the OMG summit is close to CA and its right before my birthday! I really want to go so please help me reach my goal!!! Thank you for all your support!
