Our fundraiser is the result of a recent trip to Israel where our Keystone cohort, a leadership development program for emerging Jewish leaders, met Shachar Ufaz. Shachar is an IDF special forces reservist who left his law career to run one of the most meaningful organizations we encountered - "One of Us."
"One of Us" is a pre-military academy, known as a "mechina" in Hebrew, specifically dedicated to helping young men who are on the periphery of Israeli society prepare for the army, both physically and mentally. Many of these youth have troubled families and disadvantaged backgrounds; some have even broken the law. Without this mechina, most of its participants would never be able to enter the army at all. After this program, almost all of them are going into the army, some of them into elite units. Most importantly, "One of Us" ensures that its young men are integrated into society and graduate with a better reality and a renewed sense of purpose.
Immediate resources are urgently needed to expand the existing mechina and to open a second one (future plans include a female-only mechina), as the existing institution can barely keep up with the demand for its unique services.
Inspired by the physical component of the mechina's training, our team is joining forces with friends, family and colleagues to take part in a Tough Mudder half-couese on July 24th in Long Island.
All funds raised will go to "One of Us." Please join us by donating what you can to support the admirable work of this organization. Every dollar counts.
