BENEFITING: One Love Foundation in honor of Yeardley Love
In 2013, my cousin, Emily Rechlicz, passed away as a victim of relationship abuse. A graduate student at Marywood University, she was on her way to becoming a Physicans Assistant when her long- time boyfriend brutually raped her after they had broken off their relationship. Being the courageous person she was, she stood trial to bring her abuser to justice, but when he made bail and continued to threaten her life, she felt trapped, eventually ending her own life.
After this tragedy, our family decided that something good had to come out of a bad situation - we started Team Emily, a group of friends and family running various races in memory of her. During this time, I have run 3 marathons and 9 half marathons and am honored to run the 2017 New York City Marathon as a member of the One Love Team.
One Love was founded in 2010 to honor Yeardley Love, a UVA student who was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend just weeks before their graduation. Today, One Love honors Yeardley by working with young people across the country to raise awareness about the warning signs of abuse and activate communitites to work to change the statistics about relationship violence. The mission of the One Love Foundation in honor of Yeardley Love is to end relationship violence by educating, empowering and activating young people in a movement for change.
I'm hoping we can empower those around us to recognize the signs of domestic abuse so they can be stopped before another family experiences the loss mine has. To learn more about OneLove, please visit their website: http://www.joinonelove.org/
