In my parents hometown of San Jeronimo, Baja Verapaz located in Guatemala, I want to re-establish an existing library which has poor materials and 0 resources for student interaction or early childhood stimulation. The centrally located building is a lonely two room structure with about 5 large shelves filled with sad looking books that are in too poor of condition to be handled by the younger children.

I have visited the adjacent elementary school and preschool every time I visit "home" and see how much these kids (like all kids) love to be read to, love arts and crafts, love to explore books - something that even I took for granted as an adult when I ventured into my local library.

Today, I envision a building that will foster stories, imagination and creativity.

The BIG IDEA: Splitting the largest room in half we can have smart seating to encourage self exploration of all books of different ages and stages of reading. One side will be dedicated to toddlers and early confident readers. The second half will host reading material and school resources for tweens and teens! The second computer room will be a multi-purpose room available to the all the area schools in which the classrooms will share art supplies, board games and enrichment programs materials.

WHO IT WILL HELP: 2 preschools, 3 elementary and middle schools PLUS toddlers too young for the school system - a total of 3,500 children under 17 according to the last civil census of 2012.

THE GOAL: Raise $5,000 to jump start this dream by the start of the coming school year: January 2015.

One library book does not help one child alone- but hundreds of kids throughout many, many years...

One library book opens up minds to new ideas, new words at the turn of every page...

100% of proceeds go to the libary - books, art supplies and building structure updates.

0% for administration - all this work is volunteered base including the children of the town who eagerly await their new library!!!
