BENEFITING: ONE SPIRIT
OneSpirit currently provides food boxes to 300 families, but there are 75 currently on the waiting list. Inspired by the Lakota 5 who planned to run the NYC marathon in 2012 and instead used their legs to deliver supplies to those devastated by Hurricane Sandy, Lyn-Genet Recitas is donating a percentage of sales to OneSpirit, and is encouraging her Planners to support the cause with the goal of providing food to the 75 families on the waiting list for the month of December.
We think of epidemic hunger as only happening in third world countries and never in the United States. For many children, elders and families on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, hunger is a constant presence and the source of the next meal is often unknown. With an average family income of $6000 per year, families go without food on a regular basis.Preventable illnesses become chronic and debilitating due to malnutrition.
One Spirit is a registered nonprofit that operates on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. One Spirit and the Lakota people have joined efforts to bring an end to hunger and diet related disease by providing fresh fruit, vegetables and meat to families and elders in need. Through the generosity of sponsors, the ONE Spirit food program delivers food that is both high quality and highly nutritional. Food boxes cost $65 each.
