ONE Spirit Sponsors Runners in the NYC Marathon
These runners from Pine Ridge are truly modern day heroes, and against all odds, are competing in the most prestigious marathon in the world in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the Allen Youth Center.
Through the sacrifice and hard work of the Lakota Five, we hope to raise $18,000 to donate to the Youth Center. Your donation will support these young role models in their courageous efforts and will help inspire the young people of Pine Ridge, as well as giving them an amazing Youth Center.
We thank all of the ONE Spirit donors for your contributions in making this happen and hope you will keep these young men in your thoughts going forward!
Nupa White Plume
Nupa White Plume is running in the New York City Marathon for Team ONE Spirit on November 4, 2012. Nupa is an all-around athlete and has competed in the Iron Warrior events and is an experienced horseman as well. Last year, he auditioned for and won one of two spots in the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show, which is a modern version of the same event that chief Sitting Bull was part of over one hundred years ago. Nupa chose to stay home with his family rather than tour Europe, though. He’s still making headlines and was even in a TV commercial as a Native in hiding- until someone’s cell phone went off! National Geographic photographer Aaron Huey took the field test picture with his horse, at his home in Manderson that is seen above. We wish Nupa the best as he continues to train for this world class event!
Kelsey Good Lance
Kelsey Good Lance is one of the Lakota runners, sponsored by ONE Spirit, who is running in the New York City Marathon on November 4, 2012. Despite the relentless heat this summer, he’s been training hard for this special event. Kelsey’s hard work has paid off and he recently won the Oglala Lakota Nation 10k race! What makes this win even more impressive is that Kelsey actually arrived late to the race- after the other runners had begun, and still won it easily! We are so excited to have him representing ONE Spirit- WAY TO GO, KELSEY!
Jeff Turning Heart, Jr.
Jeff Turning Heart, Jr. is one of the Lakota runners representing ONE Spirit in the NYC Marathon in November. He’s been training hard for this world class event and his training is already paying off…he won the Harvest Fest 5K run by 900 meters! His time of 22 min. 26 seconds was fully one minute faster than his time last year- despite the pouring rain.
A dedicated runner, Jeff has run a total of 2,107.9 miles so far this year but said he is training smarter and has been working on his pace since pace carries you the entire race. He’s also been focused on increasing his flexibility and range of motion, so that he has more speed and endurance, which certainly paid off in his latest win.
Jeff runs for the pure joy of running and has run all through high school and college. He said that he always wore bland clothes to run in, but has changed that since he’s started running for charities. He has great fun with crazy running outfits, wild, funky socks, and even a hot pink Mohawk!
Running in the NYC Marathon is a dream-come-true for Jeff…literally. He’s wanted to run in the marathon since he was old enough to watch it on TV and is both nervous and excited to finally get this chance. He’s been studying the race course and because it starts off in Time Square, crosses the Brooklyn Bridge and ends up in Central Park, he’s considering wearing a head-cam so he can video the entire event from inside the ropes.
Jeff says it is a HUGE honor to be able to run in such an epic event for ONE Spirit and he will have lots of family and friends watching and supporting him. Please join us in supporting Jeff Turning Heart, Jr. in the New York City Marathon on November 4, 2012!
