We work with surf camps in Kingston and surrounding areas to create after-school programs that keep children in school by offering the incentive of surfing lessons and access to surfboards. We aim to travel responsibly as surfers and tourists, and to give back to the international communities we visit by bringing recycled surf equipment and engaging with the local youth. Despite having approximately 140,000 idle youth and a significant crime and gang recrtuitment rate, Jamaica is a world-class tourist destination with impressive surf breaks. Because surf equipment is expensive and not available on the island, very few young people can enjoy the sport. With low resources, Jamaican surf camps have a very limited capacity to rent boards to youth, who could turn to the surfing industry instead of crime as a source of income. In order to increase this capacity, OneWave donates surf equipment to partner camps to make surfing available to every child. We personally travel to Kingston regularly and deliver donations ourselves.
