BENEFITING: PLAYA SUNRISE ROTARY CLUBFOUNDATION INC
I am running the Malibu Half Marathon to support LAFD 63. Donations made through the Playa Sunrise Rotary Club Foundation for this campaign, will go directly to supporting LAFD 63!
So here's the story, most of you already know it, but here we go one more time:
I had knee surgery so that I could run marathons again. I was sick of the pain I was experiencing as a I ran. So off I went for a little procedure, who would have thought that something so simple, could turn into something so dramatic, well it did!!
48 hours later (one year ago on October 29th), I had the experience of having five LAFD 63 paramedics in my bedroom, such a shame that I don't remember it!! But they do :-)
I am one hell of a lucky girl thanks to Billy, George, Greg, Sal & Howard - without these awesome men, I wouldn't be alive today. I went into cardiac arrest and had a heart attack. They did what they are trained to do, and were determined not to let me go. CPR and 8 shocks later, I was admitted to ER, where, with the continued work of the Marina del Rey Hospital ER crew and a few more shocks, I made it into ICU.
From there, I was transferred to Kaiser ICU for 2 more weeks, until I was released to go home.
The effects of this "event" left me in November 2011 with a sore chest (ha), some numbness in my arm, still a sore knee, a bonus of a heart shaped bruise on my back, but otherwise I came out of this remarkably well.
Today, with the help from some wonderful people, I am back running, somewhat pain free, with a 98% functioning arm, still have a heart shaped bruise, and I feel great.
To show my gratitude, love and appreciation for my favourite boys in uniform, I am pleased to say that I am running again, and that I am dedicating my first run to LAFD 63.
On Sunday November 11th, I'm heading out to my first race in 2 years: The Malibu Half Marathon. One of my favourite races, even though the PCH is full of hills! I am determinded to get my medal (and beach towel), run with my favourite group of people: Laurie, Laura, Estelle & Jennifer. Tony, Dan, Bennett, Saeed and hopefully Dave & Phil will be joining our merry bunch on runners!
Please help me show how much these guys mean to me - and you! They have to purchase anything and everything they need at the firehouse OUT OF POCKET!!!! If they want to paint, they have to buy it. They need new weights in the workout room, they have to buy them, carpet, coffee, daily food etc. The city doesn't pay for anything, they do the up keep on Station 63 themselevs. So I want to help them, as they helped me.
It's not going to be a record breaking run, but my longest run to date, and probably my slowest, but I'm doing it for LAFD 63, to prove to myself that I can still run marathons - all be it, this is a half - but one step at a time.
Won't you help me??
Giving thanks to all the people who have helped me get back my health and fitness: Stella Morris, Leila Valdivia Keegan, Adam Griffin, Chris Plourde, Dana McGraw, Archie Tedeco, Taffy Wallace - without you guys, I wouldn't be running today. Love you guys xoxo
