Event Name: CGI U Commitments Challenge 2016
EVENT DATE Mar 21, 2016
In the town of Hawassa in Southern Ethiopia, a high number of female university students compete with commercial sex workers in the night clubs, being the majority among women going for abortion services. Several local and international businessmen/tourists drive to the university campus to pick up female students at night. Similar problem exists in every urban universisty in Ethiopia.
Our mission is to mentor and provide student employment for economically disadvantaged female college students in Ethiopia by launching small businesses on university campuses. On-Her-Own is a social enterprise that provides low-income female university students with much needed income, work experience and more importantly empowerment.
Our proof of concept is a small print shop we launched on August 2015 at Hawassa University. We have 9 employees and we have been running for 8 months now. 5 of the 9 employees are low income female students working on a weekly schedule. By doing so, On-Her-Own has become the first work-study program in Ethiopia.
We aim to build a community of strong university women who give back. Help us realize the first step of this vision. We need to buy three commercial copiers to double the number of students we empower by not just training but also by providing a concrete earning option.
