I traveled to Israel/Palestine on a church mission trip in March 2015, and the reality of violence and injustice in the Holy Land hit me harder than I could have imagined. We had done our research before traveling and knew what to expect; what I didn't see coming was how much I would love the land and the people - more deeply than I have ever loved any place in my life - and suddenly the Holy Land conflict was breaking my heart and changing so many of the things I thought I knew about myself and God.
It took about two months after returning from the mission trip for me to realize that God was calling me back full-time. I didn't know what that calling would look like, only that I wanted somehow to be of value to the people living in the midst of conflict. I reached out to my pastor, he made a connection for me, and in a matter of weeks I was offered a teaching position at the Jerusalem School.
The Jerusalem School is a Christian K-12 school in Palestinian East Jerusalem. The majority of the student body is made up of Palestinian Muslim children whose parents send them to the school because it offers one of the best educational opportunities for Palestinians; graduates are accepted into colleges in the US, Israel, and throughout the Middle East. The school's slogan is "Peace Begins with Me," and their curriculum reflects peacemaking as a priority. I will be teaching 7th grade history and character-building, which is a unique history curriculum based on peacemakers instead of conflicts.
I need to raise $9000 to cover my living expenses while I serve as a teacher at the Jerusalem School. While serving, my priority will be to give the very best of myself and my talents to the children I teach, and to share the love and hope of God in their lives. I plan also to network with people and organizations in the area who are working towards peace and reconciliation. My prayer is to get connected on the ground, learn what is already being done, and get involved in whatever way I can. I deeply, deeply appreciate your prayers and support!!
