THE STORY:

OPEN A DOOR FOUNDATION wrote -

As many of you know, last year I started mentoring an extraordinary young woman named Sharon Damas, who I was connected with through the Open A Door Foundation. Sharon is an orphan, as she lost her mother to AIDS in '94 and never knew her father. She was sent to live with other family members who turned her into their domestic slave. Luckily, Sharon escaped and transformed her fate. She got an education and is a passionate, dedicated, introspective and brilliant woman who aspires to be a global leader and human rights advocate. She has a deep connection with her community and an enlivened spirit, despite her circumstances. Like the other OAD candidates, Sharon has applied for a full scholarship to five colleges in the United States, and we are eagerly anticipating an acceptance letter this spring.

In honor of Sharon and the rest of the OAD candidates, I would be thrilled and honored by your contribution of any amount to fund our programs.

The next group of candidates will be chosen this summer, and OAD has invited Kathleen Ruffle to teach a College Prep course for the group of 15 to ensure they stand out and win scholarships. This course will include SAT and TOEFL preparation and will help them to navigate the complicated college application requirements. Being in Rwanda also allows her to train a Rwandan teacher who will teach after she leaves, and be a continued resource for the program.

WHAT YOUR CONTRIBUTION BRINGS
OAD seeks young women with a spark and who, because of life circumstances, have no way of accessing available international scholarship money. Our goal is to change that. It starts by raising $25,000 for our spring challenge, which will enable 15 young women to enroll in the college Prep Course, have all SAT/TOEFL exam fees covered, and have access to their own work space equipped with computers. Most importantly, this money supports the growth of OAD, ensuring that a Rwandan teacher will continue the class in years to come.

CARRY THE SPARK FORWARD
I hope you can make a contribution, of any amount, to carry the spark forward. Your contribution will prepare aspiring leaders like Sharon, passionate enough to risk her life for change, with the degrees and skills needed to return and help their country prosper.
