IMMIGRANT LEGAL ADVOCACY PROJECT wrote -
Last year, one of our staff helped a client get her green card through DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. The young woman went through the process, got her fingerprints, green card and started college. She recently wrote ILAP to let us know her progress. "I'm going back to school this semester to continue my education. I know you deal with lots of situations at your work and many of them don't have a happy ending. I hope that my story shows you why it is great that you do what you do and pushes you to keep going. If it wasn't for you helping me I wouldn't be where I am now. So, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I wish I could do more to show my appreciation. I can promise that I will use this opportunity to pursue my dreams and help make the world a little better. Thanks again so much."
Do you care about social justice? Building communities? Cultural diversity? This is the work that ILAP does, offering immigration legal aid statewide in Maine.
This is our first virtual campaign to support the important work of the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project helping low income immigrants improve their legal status and working for more just and humane laws and policies affecting immigrants. Open Door is a 6 week campaign based on the concept of welcoming those from away to our state, providing them with what they need to create a new life here and enjoying their contributions to the community. Many of our ancestors found open doors in the land of promise, and today ILAP provides resources for low income immigrants to improve their legal status so they too can access the life they dreamed of leading here.
Despite immigration reform being stalled in the federal government and the state government seeking to change policies to make it more difficult for immigrants to settle in Maine, ILAP is working fervently on assisting immigrants with legal aid that helps them move forward, which helps our state move forward. Your help goes directly towards building strong communities one family at a time.
Thanks, and Happy New Year!
