Open Heart Magic (OHM) is a Chicago-based non-profit organization that performs one-on-one bedside magic for sick kids in hospitals. Our Mission is to use the therapeutic power of magic and laughter to energize and strengthen seriously ill children and aid their healing. We strive to reach young patients one-by-one regardless of their disease, medical situation or physical ability so that all children may benefit from this engaging and entertaining therapy.
OHM currently has 60 Volunteer Hospital Magicians working in 9 hospitals in the greater Chicago area, one-on-one with patients and their families creating magic, and teaching tricks to kids and their siblings. OHM Hospital Magicians provided over 3,500 one-on-one Bedside Magic performances to kids and their families in 2012. Our goal is to grow to over 150 Hospital Magicians so that we can see 10,000 kids per year within the next three years.
The lion's share of our volunteers have no magic experience and graduate from Magic University, where they learn the art of magic & how to adapt it to a hospital environment. During this 12-week training, volunteers are prepared with all the tools necessary to amaze & astonish patients and their families. Once they graduate from Magic U, not only are they confident and ready to perform bedside magic, but they become part of an elite tight-knit community of quite possibly, the best volunteers in Chicago.
