BENEFITING: OPENING ACT INC
$12,000 will allow Opening Act to expand to serve an additional New York City school for a full year. Opening Act will provide 30 weekly two-hour after-school workshops, two highly trained Opening Act Teaching Artists, two original student performances, as well as special out-of-class activities for students.
Opening Act specifically targets New York City’s highest need schools: we reach out to schools that have low reading scores (less than 30% of incoming freshmen reading at grade level), low graduation rates (less than 54% of students graduating in four years), and an evident lack of theater programming. All of our programs are offered at no cost to our schools, guaranteeing that regardless of fluctuating school or Department of Education budgets, we are there for our students.
At this critical time of city, state, and federal budget cuts, our programs have become increasingly valuable to schools and their communities as we are one of very few arts organizations offering programs free of charge to the schools.
Opening Act’s voluntary, weekly, after-school theater programs span a full year and use improvisation, acting games, and writing exercises to help students unleash their creativity, foster collaboration, and develop professional acting technique. Through their artistic achievements, Opening Act students develop leadership and problem solving skills and strengthen their abilities in writing and self-expression. The culmination of each program is an original production, created and performed by the students in professional theaters. Past years’ productions have included theme-based ensembles, series of individually written one-acts, full length plays created through group improvisation, and a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello. The plays have been performed at The Public Theater, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Chashama, and Baruch Performing Arts Center.
