BENEFITING: South Florida Hunger Coalition
Welcome to OPERATION NOT ONE HUNGRY HOMELESS STUDENT DELRAY BEACH!
We are a group of concerned citizens determined to stop this:
Over 150 homeless students in Delray Beach may endure 68 hours of hunger every weekend.
Sad Truth: Palm Beach County had identified more than 3,750 students as homeless and in school at mid-year, up 25% over last year. Imagine the stress of being homeless on a young teen student, in the classroom, trying her hardest to pay attention, study and learn. Research confirms her uphill battle: food insecurity and lack of sleep compound her burden with an increased risk of ILLNESS, ABSENCES, STRESS, DIFFICULTY CONCENTRATING and CHRONIC FATIGUE make it nearly impossible for her to do her job as a student, to learn, and to dream of a brighter future.*
The daily challenges of being homeless on a student are tough enough. We want her to have one less worry, WHAT TO EAT.
In Delray Beach, at mid-school year, over 110 children & 50 teens were known to be HOMELESS in our elementary schools, Carver Middle school and Atlantic Community High school.
There’s hope for each one, in a simple weekend bag of kid-friendly foods dropped into their backpack at school every Friday afternoon to nourish them over the weekends. Enough calories, carbs and proteins to fuel brains & bodies.
$7 per weekend bag.
$250 ends hunger for 1 Student for the school year.
$6,000 feeds all homeless at 1elementary school for school year
Every dollar helps add up.
$60,000 solves this problem.
This is our goal. We believe $60,000 will be enough to feed EVERY DELRAY BEACH HOMELESS STUDENT all school year long, based on our estimates from this year.
Our challenge is to raise this by AUGUST 1, 2017. Help us. Spread the word. Donate today. Be the mover & shaker. Rock your world. Make a difference. Be a hero to one Delray Beach homeless student or a whole school.
TOGETHER WE WILL SAY "IN DELRAY BEACH, NOT ONE HOMELESS STUDENT GOES HUNGRY."
Until that day, Keep up the fight for our homeless students. We need you.
Weekend Feeding Program fulfillment proudly supported by Living Hungry, together with the South Florida Hunger Coalition (http://www.southfloridahungercoalition.org)
The South Florida Hunger Coalition (SFHC), with the support of dozens of community partners, coordinates the efforts of more than 75 hunger-related agencies across South Florida, including Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties, as well as activities in Monroe, Collier, Lee, Hendry, Martin and St. Lucie counties. We work to eradicate hunger by acting as a resource and convener for hunger-related initiatives, such as the mobile Summer BreakSpot feeding program in Broward County. SFHC advocates for greater utilization of existing federal programs such as school breakfast, school lunch, after-school snacks, after-school dinners, summer meals, school break, weekend feeding programs and expanded nutrition education. We provide technical guidance, support and assistance to implement and expand these programs as well as other hunger-related initiatives among stakeholders at the local, regional and state level.
One clarification. Homeless student counts fluctuate & hunger does no affect every homeless child the same. We plan to feed every homeless hungry student who is currently homeless or at high risk of becoming homeless. We do this by partnering with School Liasons or Counselors and trusting these experts to identify & feed thier students who are homeless, near homeless and known to be going without food at home.
