EVENT: The Wipro San Francisco Marathon 2013

EVENT DATE: Jun 16, 2013

THE STORY:

On June 16th, I will be running the San Francisco Marathon for the second time. The SF Marathon was my first real race, and since then I have run several other races as well-- two 50-milers (American River and North Face in Marin), as well as a trail marathon (Golden Hills in the Redwoods of Oakland) and the Oakland Marathon. Before I run the SF Marathon, I'm running the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati, where I grew up, and the San Diego Marathon, where I'll be joined by my family. I then have plans to run a marathon in Colombia, where I'm headed for vacation, and then finishing off the year with two more 50-milers-- the Tahoe Rim Trail and the North Face Endurance Challenge again in Marin.

All of this running keeps me healthy, and the races keep me motivated to stay healthy. I moved to San Francisco about five years ago, where I have managed a program that brings needed healthcare to uninsured people who can't afford it. I'm constantly reminded every day when I go to work how important it is to do all I can to stay healthy, and in fact my newfound running "career" was inspired by a runner, Jose, who tore his Achilles tendon. Because he wasn't able to afford health insurance and had no money for the surgery, he hobbled around for six months before finding Operation Access, at which point he had the surgery, and then recovered and was able to run a marathon. I cheered him on as he ran, and then decided it was my turn to get in shape, appreciate and celebrate my own health, and start running.

This year, I am once again using this platform of running to raise funds to support my work at Operation Access. In particular, I have started some initiatives to focus on providing donated colonoscopies to screen for colon cancer, as well as another project to provide vision-restoring eye surgeries. I continue to coordinate care to provide other procedures such as hernia repairs and knee surgery, and many more. This work depends on charitable contributions to keep it going, and more financial support means more medical care for more people.

Operation Access makes it possible for low-income, uninsured people to get needed surgical and specialty care, free of charge, through a medical volunteer network in the San Francisco Bay Area. We serve people who are simply trying to make ends meet, providing for their families and caring for their children. They cannot afford to pay for necessary medical care out of pocket. OA and our volunteers bring these people healing and hope, and enable them to live healthy and productive lives.

In 2012, over 1700 people had surgical procedures that were donated by doctors, nurses, technicians who volunteer their time and skills, and the hospitals that support them. The value of the care provided in 2012 was over $18 million.

Even with health care reform, many, many people will be left out, with nowhere to turn. Let us all be thankful for our own health, and at the same time support organizations like OA, so everyone can be healthy and able to live to their full potential. Please consider making a small donation, as well as joining me at one of my upcoming races, either as a runner or walker, or by cheering from the sidelines. Thank you.
