Operation Black-Salt is a campaign to fight against fluorosis in Bankura district in India. Fluorosis is a disease due to high concentration of fluoride in ground water in some blocks of Bankura district. Permissible limit of fluoride is much higher than 12 mg/l against the maximum tolerance level 1mg/l as per WHO's standard. Some parts of the district like Laxmisagar, Machatora, Jamda where fluoride contamination level is raised up to 14mg/l. One of main reason of fluorosis is Black-Salt which is one of the ingredient used for preparation of food by local people as it is cheaper than the iodized salt. Operation Black-Salt is a campaign planned to spread throughout of the district in fluorosis prone areas to change this food habit while cooking food. Operation Black-Salt is also design a training programme for the teachers so that they can detect fluorosis affected student in their schools. Blood and urine samples will be collected for detection of fluoride contamination and free medicine will be disbursed among the affected students. Operation Black-Salt is indeed a holistic initiative to generate an awareness and prevention and control programme of fluorosis throughout the district.
Total number of benefiting students are around 1924 of 30 primary schools at 1st stage.
