COMMUNITY LIGHT HOUSING CORPORATION's Fundraiser:

Operation Community SOARS (Supporting Outside Access Rides for Seniors)

COMMUNITY LIGHT HOUSING CORPORATION's Photo

THE STORY:

Join us to help empower seniors to be able to enjoy nature, community events, local attractions, parks, bike trails, museums, concerts, and more. Unfortunately often seniors and people with disabilities are restricted from life's every day simple pleasures such as enjoying a park, a bike trail, museum, community concert and more because they no longer are able to walk independently. Our goal is to offer more opportunities for seniors and people with disabilities to have barrier free access to nature, parks, trails, community events, and local attractions. PROBLEMS: Seniors and people with physical walking limitations do not have opportunities to fully access and enjoy parks, biking trails, sidewalks, museums, tourist attractions, nature trails, etc. (Many people with walking limitations can get in & out of cars independently & walk 200 ft or so to get to a wheelchair or golf cart but they can’t walk a half of a block so they are very limited in where they can go) Not everyone can lift a wheelchair into a trunk and take it to push someone but they can drive them to a location and push the person if the wheelchair is there to borrow and use. Usually only one wheelchair can fit into a trunk or van, so if someone has more than one person in a wheelchair to take on an outing they won’t have enough wheelchairs even if they have the extra volunteers to push the wheelchair. It is not easy to find volunteers to push people in wheelchairs outside on outings It is hard to push wheelchairs on grass so wheelchairs are limited to sidewalks. Often there may be only one person available to take 2-3 people on an outside outing that require wheelchairs so they can’t go on an outing. Pushing a wheelchair up even a little hill is hard and so often limits where you can take someone in a wheelchair if you are older yourself. Caregiver’s unable to enjoy the outside. Often people that provide 24/7 care for loved ones are not able to get out and enjoy parks because they can’t take their loved one with them and they can’t leave them home alone. This program would allow caregivers to enjoy the outdoors more as well. Often it is hard to find a spot to pull up to and to drop a senior off while you park a car. There is no bench available for them to sit in while you park a car and go inside to get a wheelchair perhaps. Motorized scooters are very hard to come by and many people are not able to safely maneuver them alone so they need to rely on other means of transportation and assistance Multi-generational opportunities are limited since seniors cannot easily go where children can play outside or to explore museums together POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: Offer more wheelchairs at key spots in communities that can be rented or loaned out. Some locations have a few wheelchairs but more are needed and some locations don’t have any of them. Plus have certain days and times where volunteers are waiting to push people in wheelchairs to enjoy the attraction or event. Allow golf carts (for people with physical limitations) at certain locations and or certain days/times that can be rented or loaned out or maybe a few times a year for park and trail access events. This allows access to nature and to grass park areas that you can’t push wheelchairs on and opportunities to enjoy the bike and walking trails. Carts would allow one person to take 2-3 people at a time. Allows people to once again be on grass and not limited to watching from the sidelines. (You can drive two seniors to a park but they can only look at it from the sidelines. Imagine them getting into a golf cart and being able to explore a park and find a shady spot for a picnic….simple pleasure but one not offered to people using wheelchairs) Work with the city and parks to have wheelchairs and golf carts donated and then either loan out at no charge or very nominal fee. Work with groups that offer volunteers to have certain times and days or monthly events where you could reserve volunteers to meet at certain locations and events to push wheelchairs or drive golf carts. Including parks, fairs, tourist attractions, parades, and concerts, etc. Offer rickshaws, golf carts, and wheelchairs at locations with parking for special events and volunteers to push the wheelchairs. Offer more designated spots where you can pull up to help a senior to a bench while you park the car or get a wheelchair out. Example: Even if the parks or downtown had wheelchairs to use it would be hard to drop a person off while you park a car because you can’t leave them standing on the sidewalk, however you could help them to a bench if you had a drop off spot and a bench to leave them on. Purchase rickshaws to have available to either rent for a nominal fee or have volunteers to take seniors and people with disabilities on rides at no charge on the bike trails and in certain neighborhoods. Fly be Free:) So many possibilities! Please join us
