Operation Education is a fundraiser that I have started in order to finance my trip to Africa where I will be working with a NGO named Imagine Scholar. The community I will be working in is located in the Nkomazi region of Mpumalanga, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. In this region over 80% percent of the community do not have the opportunity to earn money, access to the Internet or literature of any kind. Children in this region as with all of South Africa are required to attend school. However, their classes often have 80+ students per class and do not have enough desks for the students and teachers that regularly do not show up for class. Students are discouraged from asking the teachers questions because the objective of these schools is not to educate the students but to cycle them through a system.
Imagine Scholar develops students around a "Four C's" model. Those Four C's are critical thinking, character, communication and community. Students "enhance their character, acquire critical thinking mindsets, develop effective communication skills and build community through active engagement in service projects." (IS) By teaching those core values, Imagine Scholar steps away from the traditional factory education model that is currently in place and instead develops the whole person. During this four-year program each student undertakes "they make immediate, tangible change in their lives and in the lives of their peers all while building a foundation for sustainable, lasting change for the region as a whole" (IS) in doing so the entire community is lifted up. Other areas that the scholars learn is theory of knowledge, community research, academic and creative writing, leadership, community service and HIV/AIDS awareness to name a few.
I will be living and working in the Nkomazi region as the Student Development Manager for the next year. Since Imagine Scholar is a small non- profit working in a rural area it has a very small budget. This is where you and your donations come in. The money raised through this fundraiser will go towards travel costs from the United States to Africa, the purchase of supplies for the students such as e-readers, iPad, camera's, and computers so that the students are able to learn and train using today's technologies and ultimately making them more competitive in the job market and prepare them for college. I am also looking to collect any older (not too old) generation models of the equipment listed above. Additionally receipts are available for any donations made upon request. Proceeds that are remaining after expenses will go to sponsor students. It currently costs 1,200 dollars per student to attend the program. Without donations these students would not be able to participate in a program that is literally changing lives. Thank you in advance for your generosity and please share this campaign with other like-minded people.
