THE STORY:

For the last 15 years, I have had the privilege of working within our community to support those impacted by violence and abuse in the context of relationships that ought to be safe and nurturing.  We live in a world focused on blaming individuals and communities for their circumstances rather than uplifting those who are victimized while taking a stand to hold perpetrators of violence and abuse accountable for their actions.  Safe Homes of Orange County proudly takes a position of standing with survivors, offering support and advocacy, while partnering with systems and community members to ensure that none of us are complacent when it comes to empowering survivors, creating safer communities and sending a clear message that abusive and oppressive behavior will not be tolerated.

I often have opportunities to talk with people I know - in both professional and personal settings - about the far-reachiing impact of domestic and sexual violence.  No matter the place, the conversations usually highlight how little is known and understood about the impacts and dynamics of domestic violence and how much work is still yet to be done.

While it may be easy to seperate yourself from those who experience violence and abuse at the hands of their intimate partner, the truth is - we all know someone who silently lives the terror of this reality, often entrapped by the looming threat of escalation, increased violence, homelessness, withdrawal of financial and other support, instability, emotional harm to their children, and the list goes on.  I can almost guarantee you that we all know more than one person who is impacted in this way.

Please take a moment and consider making a donation to Safe Homes in honor of those we know and love.  No matter where they may be, the hope is that they have access to the type of support and assistance we offer at Safe Homes.  Your contribution, no matter how big or small, ensures this.   THANK YOU!

Below is some information about Safe Homes work over the last year.  Worth highlighting is the agency's tagline of Creating Safety, Reclaiming Equality, Pursuing Justice.  Feel free to also reach out to me should you have any questions.

ORANGE COUNTY SAFE HOMES PROJECT INC wrote -

Once again, Safe Homes of Orange County is excited and honored to participate in the Allstate Purple Purse Challenge. Many of you know our story. For those who don’t, our organization was started around a kitchen table in 1986 by community members who wanted to help women experiencing abuse and violence. Thirty-one years later, we have remained dedicated to helping adult and child survivors of intimate partner violence, teen dating violence, and human trafficking. In 2016, we provided 17,414 advocacy services including housing, law enforcement, medical, mental health and social services, legal support and employment. We provided over 4,849 nights of safety to survivors of violence, offering them a safe space to recover, reclaim, and rebuild their lives. Since our participation with the Purple Purse Challenge last year, Safe Homes has launched two high risk teams in partnership with local law enforcement, partnered with HONOR to get a housing program up and running, and grown our Safe Harbor trafficking program to include a case manager as well as a project coordinator. Legal assistance services provided through contract with Legal Services of the Hudson Valley help to protect survivors and hold abusers accountable. Our social services liaison program helps to ensure survivors have access to state and federal resources. We advocate for the development and implementation of victim-sensitive laws, policies, and procedures across all systems that impact the safety and recovery of survivors of intimate partner violence, teen dating violence, and human trafficking. We provide services to those who need us 24/7. We help survivors navigate systems, by promoting healing and wellness, and connecting our clients with resources that support economic recovery. For 31 years, Safe Homes has offered empowerment, support and safety in hopes that all can people can live free from violence, abuse and control; and we will continue to do so until this atrocity ends. To all who have supported us, we offer our deepest thanks and we look forward to a continued partnership of helping. To those who are new friends, we hope you will take a moment to get to know us a little bit better and consider contributing to support our work and community.
