BENEFITING: ORGANIZATION FOR AUTISM RESEARCH
ORGANIZER: ORGANIZATION FOR AUTISM RESEARCH
EVENT DATE: Mar 20, 2016
Sunday, March 20th I will be running in the NYC half-marathon with a good friend of mine. We met each other at a mommy playgroup and became friends instantly. As fairly new moms and fairly new runners, this is an exciting, yet challenging goal and one that we are excited to achieve.
Another goal that we look forward to achieving, is our goal to raise money for children with autism. We will be running the marathon on behalf of the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) and have pledged to raise $1,000 – all donations will go directly to research that improves the lives of those affected by autism. OAR is a national, nonprofit organization formed and led by relatives of children and adults with autism and Asperger Syndrome. OAR is dedicated to promoting research that can be applied to help families, educators, caregivers, and individuals with autism find much-needed answers to their immediate and urgent questions.
There are an estimated 2,000,000 individuals living with autism in the United States at this time. As mothers of two young children, we can’t even begin to fathom the impact that a child with autism can have on a family. Children with autism often have intellectual disabilities, difficulties in motor coordination, impaired social interaction as well as impaired verbal and non-verbal communication.
Researchers are just starting to understand some of the environmental and genetic factors that may be linked to autism, but there are still so many questions to be answered.
We are running on behalf of OAR with the hope that additional research can help provide some answers and guidance as to how best to cope with the disorder, and hopefully, in the future a cure.
We hope you will consider making a donation to this very important cause.
Thank you so much for your support!
