Dear Friends, Family & Other Amazing People,
Welcome to my fundraising page! I have been chosen to be a Global Leadership Program Fellow for winter 2014-2015 with Saha Global.
I am a second-year graduate student in the Master of Public Policy & Administration (MPPA) program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. My research focuses on international development, natural resource management and policy, fragile states, and global governance issues. My hope is to influence how aid and development policies are used to tackle our urgent development challenges, and improve development outcomes for the billion+ people in need around the world.
During December and January, I will be in Ghana with a team of three Field Representatives to set up a water business in a village currently lacking access to clean water. Once set up, this business will provide a permanent source of water for 700-1000 people. As I will be leading this process, I will be able to verify that the community that I'd be working with is benefiting directly from the business, and that it’s set up in a sustainable and lasting way.
We will be partnering with rural communities in Northern Ghana to establish a sustainable and replicable social business that provide clean water. This business will be owned and operated by women in the communities they serve, and will use simple, affordable technologies. The maintenance and operation of the business will be funded by revenue from the business sales, while the capital necessary to establish them is generated from my fundraising activities. And all businesses implemented by the Saha Global Leadership Program to date are currently in operation, providing necessary clean water and electricity to residents and providing a small income for the women who run them.
The access to safe water and basic sanitation is a growing problem, and the steadily increasing global demand for water is putting entire communities at risk in regard to health, food production, economic opportunities, development, and the lives of their most vulnerable members - children. I would love to leverage the experiences that I have been afforded and the knowledge that I have acquired to serve the people of Ghana and provide access to clean water. However, the capital necessary to establish these businesses is generated through fundraising and as a Global Leadership Program Fellow I am responsible for generating a portion of that. The funds I raise would go directly towards starting the water business my teammates and I would be establishing, and ensuring that it keeps running after we leave.
If you have any questions, would like to know more about the project, or would like to help support my travel and medical expenses, please feel free to contact me at email@example.com or (413) 262-7505.
