THE STORY:

Funds raised through Giving Tuesday will be used for further soil testing for dioxin in the Oroville area, California. Dioxin is a very poisonous chemical produced as a by-product of incineration and certain inductrial processes such as the manufacture of pesticides. Dioxin attaches to the soil and lasts in the environment for a long time. In Oroville the dioxin is a result of past industrial land use and accidents such as the burning of pentachlorophenol used in preserving wood, teepee burners on former lumberyards that produced pressure treated wood products, and a former biomass generation plant that used urban wood waste as fuel.

Dioxin accumulates in the fat tissue of animals and humans. Free ranging cows and chickens are exposed to dioxin through ingestion and inhalation while eating. Humans are exposed to dioxin by eating free range meat and eggs.

Dioxin can cause cancer, reproductive and developmental problems, skin disorders, damage to the liver and damage to the immune system. It is an endocrine disruptor. The effects of dioxin are epigenetic which means the effects can be passed on to future generations.

In an area that has dioxin in the soil, people can reduce their exposure to dioxin by keeping chickens caged above the ground, removing skin and fat from meat and fish, washing fruits and vegetables and eating only egg whites.  Prevent pets and people from tracking dirt into the house.

At this time dioxin, cannot be cleaned up. One solution is to scrap off the polluted top soil and replace it with new soil.
