THE STORY:

I live and work at an orphanage in Southern Mexico that is one of the only orphanages in Mexico that accepts disabled children. There are 10 of us staff here that live and work here full time caring for the children on a completely voluntary basis. The entire orphanage is supported by private donations and receives no government assistance. Because we are full time parents and full time working and teaching for all facets of the orphanage we don't have the time to earn money for our food. With $5,000.00 I could have enough for over 3 years of food. I am the father to 3 boys; a 6yr old, a 9yr old and a 13yr old. I teach science and math to our adolescents and run the food area for staff and children. All staff work for about 17 hours a day including daily yoga and meditation. With so little staff we are responsible for parenting the children and running all the areas of the orphanage including accounting, security, maintenance, and education to name a few. We've tried to make and sell things or build websites and other sources of income but with our schedules we really do not have the time. Some staff get monetary support from their families, some rely on investments, and I am reaching out to the crowdrise community. Our children and staff eat all natural fruits and vegetables with fresh whole grains and handmade tortillas; they/we do not eat any processed food or sugar whatsoever. Our diets are a part of our health and spiritual discipline and so it is important that we do have the money for the fresh fruits and vegetables that we need. Fortunately the USD goes very far down here and it costs relatively little to feed us and our children.
