EVENT DATE: Sep 01, 2014

THE STORY:

*please note that all donations go directly to the Watoto Wa Baraka orphanage just outside of Nairobi, Kenya. A Broader View Volunteers is a partner organization used by the orphanage to facilitate fundraising initiatives from Western countries.*

Watoto Wa Baraka is a non-profit organisation in Kenya dedicated to providing for HIV/AIDS orphans and poor rural communities in Kenya. They house the neediest children in the society, those who are orphaned, neglected, abused, underprivileged and vulnerable.

Their goal is to ensure that their physical, emotional, social and spiritual development is nurtured by consistent encouragement, instilling within each individual a model of love, safety, purpose, productivity, service to others and trust in God. African Orphanage is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty, while meeting the emotional, medical, educational and social needs of the child.

The greatest need in the orphanage right now is support, both through volunteer action and adequate funding. Some of the goals that are currently being worked toward are the establishment of a permanent cooking facility, a primary school, an increased number of bunks for the children, clean & safe drinking water, child sponsors, and permanent bathroom facilities. Any donations for the above support initiatives can be made either through this site, to me directly (with allocation instructions) or directly to Watoto (specifically regarding child sponsorship) at their website below.

As a parent I fully support the cause that Watoto has been actively realizing in both Kenya and Uganda, and after months of involvement with the organization I have decided to do some hands on volunteer work in Kenya with my children. Chester, Ariel, and myself will be living on site for a month while helping to construct the buildings needed, teach in the newly developed kindergarten program, cook, garden etc and of course play with, and love on the children there. I will also be teaching a children's yoga class for the duration of our visit and would appreciate the donation of any mats for the children for these classes.
A little bit about us: I am a 26 year old single mother having just completed my BA in sociology & psychology. I have always had a passion for children, specifically issues regarding children's rights & welfare, and I feel honored to have the opportunity to make a difference, however small, in the lives of the children we will be meeting in Kenya this fall. I have decided to bring my children along with me (Chester is 7 and Ariel is 6) because I believe it is essential for them to gain a broader understanding of the world, an appreciation for what they have as Canadians, as well as an awareness of all those who go without, and to instill a deep sense of compassion and action which I hope they will carry forth into adulthood.

And lastly, a little food for thought!
