Orphans in Sumatra - Build a home
Organized by: Marci Affonso Hall
Check back soon for more photos ! You built a HOME in Duri Indonesia !
March 01, 2017
This little orphanage was discovered a week ago near Duri, Riau, Indonesia on July 5. It is 2 months old. 35 children are living here while it's under construction. They have been struggling in a poor remote area with little community support. They need electricity, water, ceiling, tile flooring, toilets, doors, kitchen, labor and material costs covered. They have been sleeping on cement... exposed to rain, sun, harsh heat and endless mosquitoes. These children will likely live here until adulthood, rather than be adopted, because of high trafficking risk. The gov't gives about 20 cents a day per child for food. A community of expats and locals are now joining together to help the work get done faster. We are hoping you can join us and build not only a new home, but help build hope back into an orphan child's life.
Funds raised will be held in my care/account. I am working with a pre-determined budget and making payments in person for work/materials. We make sure materials arrived and check progress. This is a gov't stamped approved private orphanage.
Photos above include outdoor kitchen, empty water well and trough, a donation of rice, two toilets waiting for water tanks on top.
7.13.15 - Roof going up fast and every one stayed dry when it rained! I pointed to roof and said "Good house". One girl smiled and shyly said, "We dream of good house". I used my Bahasa translator app to say and display "Dreams come true".
7.16.15 - The roof is done ! Electricity is connected and the kids are reading their school books at night ! Doors were donated, valued at $800 ! It's a holiday week now, but water and the ceiling work is well underway and next week we hope to begin the tile floor project , so kids won't have to sleep on rough cement, and be given a pillow and sleeping pad. Expats have donated a holiday dinner, a freezer and clothes. We've started collecting backpacks and assorted items like pencils, soap, toothbrush/toothpaste. Its been 11 days and generous hearts have made a HUGE difference in hope and home for these kids. Its crazy goodness !!
We now have funds for tile flooring, and a kind heart gave us a discount on already discounted tile.
