THE STORY:
We all know the statistics: Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Approximately 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year – that is 1 in every 4 deaths, – more than all forms of cancer.
The good news is, with the help of a healthy diet and physical activity – and paying attention to the early warning signs, the risks of terminal heart disease can be significantly reduced. The problem is, many people are either unaware of the symptoms to pay attention to or may attribute their aches and pains to other causes.
Like so many, my family has been deeply touched by heart disease: I lost two grandparents to stroke, my mom had a heart attack before she was my age, my husband never got to know his father and another beloved family member had a serious health scare as recently as this summer, so this year I decided to focus less on puppies, babies and the environment, and more on what matters to our hearts.
I am not a long-distance runner but I have always wanted to run one marathon. Then I joined ING U.S. and as soon as I heard this would be our final year of marathon sponsorships, I was in… despite a broken back, hip surgery and my own heart problems, I felt this was the year to remember those we have lost and try to help thousands more who may be affected. So I decided to run in the 2013 ING New York City Marathon for the American Heart Association.
The American Heart Association’s mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. That single purpose drives all they do – and the need for their work is beyond question. Visit http://www.heart.org/ to learn more about the association, the risks and what you can do to help.
