EVENT: Your Journey Your Cause 2017
Changing lives through the sport of triathlon. That is exactly what Bernard Lyles has been doing for over 25 years with Tri-Masters Sports Inititive Programs in Chicago, Il. Bernard founded Tri-Masters as a way to involve at-risk, inner-city youth of color to the multi-facted benefits of the sport The program consists of a 7-week summer camp which culminates in the young athletes participating in the Chicago triathlon. The program includes workshops on nutritional awareness, physical fitness training, and life skills training. Tri-Masters is an opportunity to create a safe haven for children who are economically disadvantaged, have witnessed community violence, and may live in environments replete with alcohol and illicit drugs. The program teaches youth that their accomplishments are limited only by their dreams and perseverance. Their motto is "Tri and you can master anything in lfie." I recently learned of Bernard and the Tri-Masters program while doing research for my final paper in my masters program class "Gender and Diversity in Sport." This program has served over 2,400 children and Bernard personally seeks out all funding, gathering support from friends, fellow triathletes, and local businesses and some grants. He estimates annual cost at $56,000. Please join me in supporting this amazing program, showing that triathlon does change lives and that anything is possible.
