My Why: This crazy idea began when I somehow convinced Crystal to sign up for her first marathon this January. Fast forward to April, she jokingly forwarded a Worth The Hurt 52.4 mile race email. At first I took it as a joke, but then, something caught my eye: every runner must raise money for a cause. I have survived many triathlons and foot races in the past but have never raised a cent in doing so.
The Cause: The The OTI Jr. Academy is a 9-week summer outreach program developed for high school and college students to expand their knowledge of healthcare professions. I've poured my heart and soul into the program I co-found three years ago with my UCSF colleagues at the Surgical Training Facility. The program engages students through job shadowing, hands-on volunteering, professional development, case studies, laboratory training, and anatomy lab & lecture.
The Event: Worth The Hurt (WTH) is an Ultra-Marathon in which I will run the 26.2 mile SF Marathon course twice. I will start June 16th at midnight 12:00am and run in the opposite direction for the first loop, then run in the normal direction to, hopefully, complete The Official SF Marathon with my girlfriend, Crystal, for the second loop.
Why Now: Crystal’s email about WTH 52.4 came at an opportune time. Due to economic constraints, we were almost forced to close the Junior Academy entirely. However, with funding from the West Contra Costa Unified School District, I’m ecstatic that we are able to operate this year at 50% capacity of last year’s participation. Monday June 17th following the WTH 52.4 is student orientation!
Support Now: I do not think I could physically complete this run without your support. My fund raising goal is $5,240, and I’m asking for you to commit $26.20, $52.40, $102.60, over even $524.00(!!!), any denomination per mile would help enormously. My goal completion time is 11 hours on my feet running and I’m asking for any support ( ANYTHING) to such the cause.
